Christmas Gifting Drive 2018

https://www.facebook.com/events/1398899973577185/?ti=ia

Christmas can be a real struggle for anyone but for those caring for loved ones with mental illness it can be a very isolating and difficult time of the year.

I know from my own experience how tough this can be.

Often we have left our jobs to care for our loved ones because the only choice we are faced with is to ensure their well-being and survival.

Families are often divided because of the impact mental illness has on their lives and FTM wants to make that just a little easier.

These packages will also be handed out at the ED ward at Starship hospital where a lot of Parents spend their time when their loved ones are admitted. (Our stay was 2 months!).

We are calling out to anyone who would like to donate anything at all to contribute to the packages that we will be making up and handing out.

Our theme for these packages is self-care.

Examples could be:

Vouchers

Adult colouring books

Bath bombs

Moisturiser

Wine

Candles

Herbal tea

Paints

Canvases

Crystals

Essential oils

Incense

Coffee

Card games

The list is endless.

We want to make up as many packages as we can.

If you are in Auckland I am happy to collect.

If you are out of Auckland I will pay for postage costs.

Email fightingthemindnz@gmail.com for more information and if you know of any small businesses that would like to donate please get in touch.

Let’s Chalk About Mental Health

As you all know, Laura has suffered from Anorexia Nervosa for the past 2 years. She has suffered anxiety since the age of 10 and has self-harmed as well.

Laura literally just about lost her life on Friday 17th February 2018.

Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, it is a slow form of suicide, a silent killer and highly stigmatised.

I’d like to thank Robert Norman Read Qbe for      recognising the importance of spreading awareness of EATING DISORDERS and MENTAL ILLNESS (if the capitals freak you out then stop reading, if not I challenge you to keep reading and share this post as far and wide as you can).

Rob manages https://www.facebook.com/SuicidePreventionAwarenes/ and is a bloody inspiration throughtout NZ and Worldwide as an advocate for Mental Illness and the legend behind reaching out and saving lives, spreading hope, inspiring others and stopping the stigma associated with Mental Illness.

Rob has given Fighting the Mind ALOT of exposure over the past couple of days and is adamant that we can fight to spread awareness of Eating Disorders.

So please get behind Facebook.com/fightingthemind and https://www.facebook.com/SuicidePreventionAwarenes/ because if you are COMPLETELY honest with yourself, EVERYONE has a story to tell!

Nobody should be or feel alone and nobody should feel unworthy.

Please also feel free to get behind https://www.facebook.com/events/640546779655078/?ti=ia it only involves a piece of chalk and an inspirational message.

Love Tori & Laura x

#neveralone

Males suffer from Eating Disorders too and Fighting the Mind aims to #FightTheStigma by encouraging everyone to upload a profile picture on to their Facebook page for the week of 19th-25th August holding the below handwritten message:

“Males suffer from Eating Disorders too #FightTheStigma”.

You do not have to be suffering from an Eating Disorder to participate.

You may care for someone with an ED, be affected by an ED or simply just passionate about ending the stigma and spreading #hope and #awareness about this highly stigmatised and silent illness.

Throughout the week Fighting the Mind will be sending out messages of hope and awareness and sharing stories from males who have been affected by an Eating Disorder.

We will also be doing livestreams to answer any questions and promoting self-care, speaking out and how NOT to let your illness define you.

Your support means everything!
